Penarth gives us two things Cardiff rarely does: sea light and salt wind. Both of them change what we draw.
What Penarth gardens ask of us
The Victorian villas around Victoria Road, Westbourne Road and the streets behind the Esplanade come with generous plots, mature trees and, usually, a century of accumulated changes in level. Work there is mostly editing: opening a lawn back out, rebuilding tired terracing in proper stone, replanting borders that can take the wind off the Channel.
Closer to the seafront, exposure is the brief. A garden on Cliff Parade lives in a different climate from one in Cogan. We build the shelter first, whether that is hedging, slatted screens or the odd wall, then plant generously inside it. Get that right and Penarth's mild coastal pocket will grow things the rest of the Vale kills off by March.

Do you charge extra to work in Penarth?
No. Penarth is a 15-minute run from the Pontcanna yard across the Barrage, so the travel is already inside our standard pricing. It is the area we work in most often outside Cardiff itself.
What grows well in Penarth gardens near the seafront?
Anything that shrugs off salt wind. Escallonia, griselinia and olearia make the shelter hedging, and grasses, sea holly, crocosmia and salvias go inside that windbreak. The microclimate really is milder than Cardiff: we overwinter plants in Penarth that we would not risk in Radyr.
Can you work with the steep gardens around the Dingle and Cliff Hill?
Yes, and slopes are the work we most enjoy. Penarth’s clifftop streets often fall two metres or more across a single garden. We terrace those with sleeper-and-steel or stone retaining walls and turn the fall into usable levels, rather than decking over the problem.
